An Exclusive Look at Empire Season 4

The Lyon family is together, but there’s trouble looming.

When Empire’s third season ended on a cliffhanger in May, the Lyon family was once again at a crossroads. Lucious (Terrence Howard) had survived a car explosion orchestrated by his son Andre (Trai Byers), who had a change of heart too late to stop it. After three months in a coma, Lucious woke up in the hospital surrounded by his worried family (and a nurse played by Demi Moore), but couldn’t recognize any of them. Having finally declared his love for Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and handed control of his company over to Andre, Lucious was poised for real happiness . . . but in the twisty world of Empire, nothing is that simple.

So what’s in store for the Lyons in Season 4? Allow this brand-new photo—produced by Condé Nast’s 23 Stories in partnership with FOX—to give you a hint. Shot by photographer Steven Klein at Brooklyn’s Grand Prospect Hall, with creative director Raúl Martinez, the photograph finds the Lyon family together and stylish as ever, but seemingly ignoring the fiery crisis unfolding behind them. Is there symbolism in the glittery fabric worn by Cookie, Hakeem (Bryshere Gray), and Jamal (Jussie Smollett), but not Lucious and Andre? Should we assume it means something that Hakeem is the one playing the burning piano? Find out when Empire returns to FOX on September 27.
